While launching a supplement was once as easy as choosing components that fit a popular wellness niche, product developers now face demands to justify their decisions, explain how ingredients interact in formulas and verify whether there is any scientific proof in support of the intended use of each component included in formulations. This growing pressure is pushing businesses to look into providing evidence-based supplement design services.


Formulation decisions are not just about scientific curiosity as they can impact various aspects of product development, including positioning and label claims. A formula may contain ingredients associated with achieving a certain health purpose. However, scientific evidence supporting ingredient selection in formulations often receives a greater level of scrutiny compared to other stages of supplement creation.


Evidence-based design services strive to address this concern through research review and analysis. This does not mean looking up ingredients associated with a specific health issue or application. It means going deeper by researching existing studies, considering dosages and checking the interaction between all ingredients in relation to scientific data.


This process can take some time. Product teams might find out that the same ingredients may be well-grounded in some situations and have insufficient evidence to prove effectiveness in others. In addition, there could be instances when evidence gaps are evident despite marketing assumptions.

Nevertheless, research reviews cannot be ignored during discussions and may serve as a point of reference.


Moreover, ingredient development is quite fast and new supplements are often created on the basis of recently released compounds. In many cases, there can be growing interest among the scientific community and customers toward new ingredients. To ensure that such excitement is based on facts, evidence-based supplement design services can analyze the existing body of research.


Finally, evidence-based formulation services change the nature of the relationship between scientific experts and product development teams. Unlike traditional consultation, this approach relies heavily on interpreting scientific literature and using it as the basis for decisions in formulation development. The process can be somewhat controversial as there are many gray areas in terms of ingredient use.


However, formulation teams often need to rely on expert interpretation of existing evidence, as scientific literature may offer guidance and helpful recommendations. However, it does not mean that researchers have a clear answer for everything related to product development. As a result, interpretation becomes an essential part of the process.


There can be discussions of the quality and relevance of the evidence. Ingredients studied by scientists may differ in terms of dosage, population, and methodology.
