Commercialization in Human Health Biotechnology Industry in Canada Tends to Be More Complicated

The discovery process generates excitement. However, one of the most challenging tasks for many Canadian human health biotech companies consists in developing a program that would be able to withstand commercialization. It requires substantial financial support, specific competencies, and access to specialized facilities, which is why the topic is becoming quite relevant for the whole industry.


The term human health biotechnology means a variety of processes that aim at preventing, diagnosing and treating various diseases. Thus, it is a very wide notion that includes activities performed by a number of Canadian companies. Those are built either on a scientific platform, or on a therapeutic candidate or a special health technology. Initial research results tend to look good, but further development of a program involves quite a lot of factors.


Commercial development adds another set of issues that require consideration. Scientists have to follow clinical pathways and manufacture products, as well as generate evidence. All these steps take time and money, and decisions made during the development process will affect the ability of a company to create and sell a product in the future.


Thus, the process puts a particular emphasis on financing. When investors make their decisions, apart from evaluating scientific merit of a program, they also pay attention to the ability of a company to handle development risks. Even though initial research may be successful, it is not enough to ensure that a business would be able to execute its idea later. This is why these issues matter a lot when investors evaluate Canadian human health biotech projects.


Even though the country provides a great research ecosystem supported by universities and healthcare organizations, sometimes companies need to establish connections that will help them access additional services or capital, and these connections will be created beyond the regional research community.


The problem is not confined to small organizations. Advanced health technology development requires an organization to balance scientific goals and real constraints. Development programs may last for several years, and, thus, there should be an ability to develop it and adapt to changes.


People who observe the development of the industry tend to focus on discoveries because they are easy to understand. However, some crucial decisions are made at the development stage, such as decisions related to manufacturing or clinical planning.


Human health biotechnology continues to be an important part of Canadian companies. In order to become successful, they need not only make numerous discoveries, but also ensure that they would be able to move to the next step of the development process. Now that development capabilities are becoming a key issue for the discussion about sector's development.


From the point of view of a stakeholder, it is necessary to realize that commercial success does not necessarily come right after scientific one.
