The history of cancer treatment over the centuries has revealed significant breakthroughs in understanding tumor characteristics and has led to personalized treatments, ultimately improving patient outcomes. However, these treatments can pose a significant challenge as tumors can undergo characteristic changes and become resistant to existing therapies. Although constant efforts have been put forth to develop new drugs, it is a time-consuming and expensive process that often fails to guarantee effective results, compounding the struggle of treating the disease.

Speer Medical Technologies, led by Tod Speer, a seasoned radiation oncologist, past professor at UW– Madison and currently the medical director of CentraCare Willmar Cancer Center, has geared up to tackle this challenge.

The organization is dedicated to advancing targeted radionuclide therapies and safer cancer remedies for patients with limited treatment options, as well as moving the technology forward into currently existing treatment paradigms. It discovers new therapies to isolate, bind, and eradicate evolving tumor cells. Unlike the traditional approach of using one drug for one target, it has devised a one-of-a-kind product, a patient-specific cancer platform dubbed MB-1702, capable of configuring drugs for different cancer types. This innovative approach accelerates drug development, ensuring prompt and effective treatment for patients.

A Transformative Focus on Targeted Radionuclide Therapies

Speer Medical Technologies is actively stimulating tumor growth in immune-compromised mice and intravenously delivering radiolabeled drugs capable of adapting their structures when encountering different cell types. This is followed by a biopsy to determine the drug configuration infiltrating the tumor.

The distinct drug profile is then extracted from the tumor using a proprietary discovery process and modified to be cytotoxic. This facilitates the administration of radionuclide radiation for the treatment.

The methodology for determining drug configurations for the tumors in mice will be replicated in human applications. The highly cytotoxic radionuclides and their tumor-specific delivery will help aide rapid drug development, redefining cancer treatment.

“Based upon promising results in multiple cancer cell lines, we have initiated animal tests to evaluate the efficacy of the MB-1702 platform in treating various tumors in vivo. If successful with the drug effectively treating multiple tumor types, then these tests will demonstrate the platform's versatility in creating a drug to target all types of solid tumors, in essence, one drug for all cancer.” says Speer, CEO and President at Speer Medical Technologies. Additionally, MB-1702’s approach and components are largely substantiated by existing literature and data.

Transforming Cancer Treatment

Speer Medical Technologies is also developing platforms to design effective treatment options for leukemia, androgen receptor-positive cancers, triple-negative breast cancer, glioblastoma, and CNS malignancies. Its GD-CNS platform is engineered to develop alpha particle-emitting radiolabeled drugs targeting CNS tumors, while the NR-80BR is designed to produce radiolabeled drugs for cancers with androgen receptor positivity.

Building on the same scientific foundation as MB-1702, Speer Medical Technologies is also developing non-radiolabeled therapeutics. For example, some of these therapeutics will be capable of acting as immunotherapy against cancer cells that are not responding to current immunotherapy drugs or if any pandemic, like COVID-19, strikes again, the platform will be able to quickly design convalescent plasma therapies for patients, curbing the huge initial death tolls.

While Speer Medical Technologies is still in the preclinical stages of development, its potential impact on cancer treatment cannot be overstated. By offering a platform capable of treating a wide range of solid tumors with unmatched precision, it aims to challenge the current paradigm of one-drug-one-target treatment.
