Why has Technology Become Essential in Patient Recruitment?

With advanced technologies at their disposal, sponsors and CROs are a step closer to seeing more patient recruitment and engagement success.

FREMONT, CA: Patients or subjects in clinical trials are the foundation of any clinical trial study. The complete research and development are centered on them, and they have been evaluated and authorized for widespread generalization. Clinical trials' effectiveness is highly reliant on patient recruitment and retention due to their essential nature.

Even for clinical trials, the rapid arrival of the COVID-19 epidemic has made hospital visits a frightening experience. Regardless of the limits, sponsors and CROs devised novel ways to include direct-to-patient techniques in clinical trials for patient recruitment and retention.

Here, digitization and technological advancements play a crucial role in ensuring smooth virtual trial procedures, particularly patient recruitment and engagements.

How can technology ease the patient recruitment process?

Clinical trials have historically depended mainly on paperwork, with patient interaction receiving less attention. Evolving clinical trial requirements, the clinical trial landscape, competition, and technological innovations, on the other hand, allowed for the introduction of a personalized and digitalized patient-centric method to clinical trials.

How is artificial intelligence used for patient recruitment in a clinical trial?

The recruitment process is time-consuming and an expensive step in clinical research. The procedure is lengthy and complicated, with a significant risk of patient abandonment.

But technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) can be used to tackle these problems. NLP is a technique that allows a computer to evaluate written or spoken words. It can be used to construct algorithms that can analyze doctor's notes and pathology reports of patients when employed in clinical trials.

How can mobile technology enhance patient engagement and minimize patient dropout rates in clinical trials?

Advanced technologies such as patient portals, sensors, and other apps make it easier to engage patients. They can now register their health information using their clinical trial or wearable medical devices instead of going to hospitals, making appointments, or asking for prescription refills.

For example, chatbots have opened up new contact channels between patients and researchers related to the clinical trial study. It is helpful for patients because forgetting appointments is a common reason for patient dropout, and chatbots can send them reminders.

How does centralized platform help in the collaboration of data during clinical trials?

Technology is at the core of clinical studies, from smartphone apps to gadgets and gizmos. The term 'Virtual Clinical Trials' was used to describe one such sophisticated application. Despite its early invention, the virtual clinical trial demonstrated remarkable adaptability in the recent pandemic crisis with limited one-on-one personal patient contact. A centralized repository also allows the collection of data rapidly.
