How Cloud-Based LIMS Helps CROs

Life Sciences Review | Friday, April 16, 2021

A cloud-based LIMS solution is designed to alleviate the transition issues employees can experience during changes.

FREMONT, CA: The scientific sector experiences difficulties while keeping up with global demand for safe and efficient pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and other scientific breakthroughs.

Contract research organizations (CROs) have increased in popularity as a means of meeting laboratory outsourcing requirements. They are now essential partners in ensuring the safety and efficacy of a wide range of scientific advancements and inventions.

What is a Contract Research Organization (CRO)?

While many CROs work with small businesses without their laboratories, others specialize in providing laboratory services to major pharmaceutical companies and research institutions. CROs work for a wide range of clients, including foundations, universities, and government agencies. Flexible resourcing and substantial cost savings are two of the advantages of the partnership for these organizations.

The ultimate challenge for a well-functioning CRO is how to satisfy such a diverse customer base. By using a cloud-based laboratory information management system (LIMS), many companies are seeking solutions.

Here are some of the advantages of using a cloud-based or software-as-a-service LIMS for CROs (and their customers).

Ability to Control for a Variety of Processes

Since CROs have so many clients, any LIMS will need to be highly adaptable. Different external organizations, for example, would certainly have different standards for how their samples are processed. A cloud-based LIMS will have a higher degree of control in meeting these various requirements.

Reporting Flexibility

Clients want their findings published in different ways, and organizations will have additional reporting criteria based on different industry regulatory standards. These various and evolving reporting requirements can be efficiently met with a LIMS solution. The process of running reports is automated and available on requests, removing the need for manual transcription. LIMS also enables reliable monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) that can be shared with external sources, boosting client confidence in a CRO's well-managed processes.

Easy Adoption

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions are the most user-friendly of all the cloud-based LIMS choices for CROs. CROs are usually smaller labs that concentrate on sample throughput rather than IT systems. Since it is included in the subscription service, a SaaS LIMS eliminates the need for a dedicated IT team.
