How Automation in Pharmaceutical is Giving a New Direction to Drug Development

Life Sciences Review | Thursday, February 17, 2022

The pharmaceutical industry is far more complicated than we realize. A single hesitant move could jeopardize the entire medication formula. Furthermore, accuracy is critical in drug manufacturing

Fremont, CA: Manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry is vastly different from that of other industries. Critical factors in the production of medicines include the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of candidate drug molecules. Today, the pharmaceutical industry has evolved into a digital forum. Previously, most manufacturing processes were manual, and it could take several people to make a single tablet or bottle of syrup. Technology has introduced an incredible source known as automation, which is fundamentally changing drug development.

The pharmaceutical industry is far more complicated than we realize. A single hesitant move could jeopardize the entire medication formula. Furthermore, accuracy is critical in drug manufacturing. The pharmaceutical industry cannot afford to make design or manufacturing mistakes. Furthermore, developing new medicines and obtaining government approval takes over ten years and costs around $2 billion. Driven by the constant hassle of time and money, drug developers are turning their attention to automation. The mechanism analyses large swaths of data and tests it across a large population by incorporating disruptive technologies into a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Because the dataset is large, this action eases the long struggle of determining efficacy. Drugmakers can achieve flexibility, optimize production, and maintain regulatory compliance with the help of automation.

It replaces the manual quality measures that were previously used. To eliminate errors, automation is now being used.

Here are some benefits that the pharmaceutical industry leverages by implementing automation:

Making Customized Medicine

One of the major challenges that the pharmaceutical industry faces is that it gives the same medicine to many patients. Gender, age, genetics, and disease are the only differences drug manufacturers take into account when developing new medications. This may benefit the general population, but standard treatments are ineffective for people suffering from a new variant of the disease. Recent advancements in drug manufacturing point to personalised medicine, which can only be obtained with the assistance of automation. Large datasets are fed into automated systems, which analyze information such as genotype data, patient medical history, familial inheritance, as well as biomedical research. These details contribute to the creation of individualized medicine for the patient.

Reducing Human Intervention

Humans are prone to making mistakes. However, the pharmaceutical industry cannot afford to accept human errors because they are unavoidable. Human involvement in drug manufacturing lengthens the process by double-checking for errors. Nevertheless, with the help of automation, drugmakers can lower the number of manual steps involved in the production, such as incubation transfers, data entry, colony counts, and other time-consuming and potentially error-prone tasks.
