Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Biotechnology and Pharma Space

Jeremy Williams, Life Science Review | Sunday, January 10, 2021

FREMONT, CA: The use of Artificial Intelligence(AI) in the pharma and biotech industry has redefined how scientists develop new drugs, tackle diseases and find preventive measures to stop the disease from effecting people who are at a risk of catching incurable disease like cancer. Pharma businesses are using AI to increase the success rates of new drugs while decreasing operational costs at the same time.

AI automates drug discovery process through automated data gathering and analysis to tackle main problems in drug discovery. It uses an algorithmic approach to figure out hundreds of genes that play complex roles in brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or ALS. AI monitors the impact of specific drugs on the human brain, helping drug manufacturers to get a better picture early on about the effectiveness of a drug on human cells. If this AI- driven approach works, it can help to treat diseases like Alzheimer’s, which is currently incurable.

AI can also act as a tool to diagnose Cancer. It recognizes patterns that are too subtle for the human eye to detect. The physicians can thus provide better therapies and improve the outcome for patients. AI helps to detect people with a risk of catching the disease, helping the physicians to take necessary actions at the right time.

The computer’s ability to spot cancer types could also cut hospital error rates. Researchers hope that more accurate screening will lead to more effective treatment. However, AI cannot be a replacement for physicians. It can only act as a powerful tool in the hands of doctors. AI could help the doctors to do their job  by identifying the high-risk cases they should focus on and help them to make decisions about uncertain diagnosis. AI plays a vital role in reducing the radiation therapy planning process to mere minutes.
