Transforming Life Sciences, One Digital Step at a Time

Shigeto M.

Shigeto M

Life Sciences Modernizer

Shigeto Miyamoto is Vice President of Digital Solutions for Asia Pacific at Syneos Health, based in Singapore. He specializes in digital transformation, omnichannel sales and marketing, and commercialization for pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare clients. He has extensive experience driving organizational change and innovation in healthcare digital marketing.

For the magazine CIOReview APAC, he shared invaluable insights on blending human expertise with digital intelligence, building trust across cultures, and translating technology into sustainable human value.

1. Can you share your career journey and the key experiences that influenced your philosophy and led you to your role at Syneos Health?

I’ve always been curious about how technology can transform industries and create new possibilities. Early in my career, I worked across Japan and Singapore, helping companies rethink business models and digital strategies. Each market taught me something different.

Three experiences shaped me most. First, I saw how digital platforms break down silos that slow innovation. Second, I learned that cultural context matters as much as technology— what works in one market may not resonate in another. And third, I coached executives on balancing agility with long-term strategy, which showed me how critical leadership buyin is when driving change.

Those lessons led me naturally to Syneos Health. The scale, mission, and global reach here allow me to bring those experiences together, building digital solutions that support both our clients and the patients they serve.

2. You’re helping shift the traditional field team model toward a more digitally enabled Deployment Solutions approach. What does that transformation look like in practice, and how are clients responding?

Traditionally, large field teams engaged healthcare professionals primarily face-to-face. While effective, today’s environment demands more flexibility. We’re blending human expertise with digital intelligence and data-driven insights.

In practice, this means using analytics to identify the right stakeholders and timing, equipping field teams with digital tools to extend reach, and creating hybrid engagement models that combine virtual and in-person interactions. Clients see the benefits quickly: better targeting, more efficient use of resources, and agility to adapt as markets shift. Ultimately, it’s about building deeper, more meaningful connections with healthcare providers.

3. How do you identify and prioritize digital opportunities that align with long-term growth goals for both Syneos and its clients?

It always starts with asking “why.” Why are we doing this, and what problem are we solving? From there, I use three filters. First, does it align with the client’s growth strategy and our role as a partner? Second, is it scalable across markets, or just a one-off? Third, do we have data that proves it can deliver measurable value?

We use agile methods , test small, learn fast, and scale what works, so we’re always balancing near-term wins with long-term transformation.

4. What leadership principles have guided you as you’ve built new digital capabilities across functions, geographies, and organizational layers?

Several principles guide me. One is empathy before technology, understanding people and context before introducing solutions. Another is collaboration, uniting commercial, medical, and tech teams around shared goals.

I also believe in failing fast and learning faster, but with respect for cultural and regulatory differences across markets. And I focus heavily on talent. Diverse teams that blend data science, healthcare expertise, and design thinking multiply impact far beyond what any single tool can achieve.

5. What advice would you give to other digital leaders in life sciences trying to modernize commercial engagement while navigating regional and cultural complexity?

Remember, it’s not just about technology, it’s about trust. Healthcare is personal, and every market has unique cultural and regulatory nuances. The first step is to listen, whether to patients, providers, or your own teams.

Build frameworks that are global in vision but flexible enough for local adaptation. Invest in people who can bridge data with cultural understanding. And be patient but persistent—small wins build credibility and momentum over time.

At the end of the day, our role as digital leaders is not simply to implement technology, but to translate it into human value. Keeping that focus ensures transformation is both impactful and sustainable.
