Superbugs: The Changing Facets of Antimicrobial Resistance in the Pandemic Era

Superbugs are bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungus strains that are immune to most antibiotics and many other treatments used to cure the diseases they trigger.


Bacteria are the ideal two-faced organisms: on the one hand, they constitute a vital microbiome that governs human health, while on the other hand, they may swiftly change into life-threatening illnesses. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are stealthily strong germs that have evolved to today's outsmart antibiotic treatments.


In 1928, accidental contact with fungus infection in a laboratory petri dish led to the discovery of penicillin, the first natural antibiotic. However, several more natural antibiotics (such as streptomycin) have been using soil microbe screens. However, bacteria's ability to acquire resistance to antibiotics has outpaced scientists' ability to find and create new antibiotic classes.


Superbugs are bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungus strains that are immune to the most antibiotics and many other treatments used to cure the diseases they trigger. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have evolved and changed from their genesis to develop tolerance, and they have the potential to induce serious bacterial infections which are resistant to treatment.


The media developed the term "superbug" to characterize microorganisms resistant to various antibiotics. Whereas, doctors, on the other hand, frequently use terms like 'multidrug-resistant bacterium' rather than "superbug"; because a superbug isn't always antibiotic-resistant." Superbugs aren't limited to a single bacterial species; they can appear in any bacterial species.


Different Types of Superbugs/ Antibiotic-resistant bacteria you must be aware of:

•  Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)


CRE is a bacterium species commonly present in human guts, but certain strains may cause life-threatening blood infections and thus are antibiotic-resistant.


•  Clostridium difficile (C.diff)


C. diff is a bacterium that can overgrow human intestines and lead to severe diarrhea. It is spread between people by spores in toilets and clothing, and it is not usually treatable with medications. C. diff can be deadly if not addressed.


•  Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter


The superbug strain of Acinetobacter baumannii may indeed be available in the soil, water, and even on the skin. It acquires antibiotic resistance faster than other bacterium and is found mainly in hospitals.


•  Neisseria gonorrhoeae


The STD gonorrhea gets caused by such a species of bacteria, which became readily treated using drugs. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, on the other hand, are growing increasingly resistant to them.


•  MRSA


MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a staph infection that is difficult to cure. MRSA is antibiotic-resistant, even though it still responds to some drugs, and the incidence of life-threatening MRSA has decreased.


How can you avoid getting infected by superbugs?


Blood transfusions, fluid body contact, sexual activity, and perhaps even skin-to-skin contact are all possible routes for superbugs to spread. Limiting touch with another person's blood or body fluids, along with washing the hands after coming into close contact with someone, is the greatest strategy to avoid the transmission of superbugs.
