From Pharmacist to Innovator: Advancing Patient Care Through Technology and Leadership

My journey in pharmacy began over two decades ago when I graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Early in my career, I worked in retail and hospital pharmacy settings, providing me with a well-rounded perspective on patient care and pharmacy operations. One of my most significant milestones was implementing a comprehensive medication management system at a major hospital. This experience sharpened my pharmacy informatics and project management skills, laying the foundation for my future endeavors.

My passion for innovation drove me to pursue further education in health informatics. I spearheaded several initiatives to integrate advanced technologies into clinical workflows, enhancing efficiency and patient safety.

These experiences collectively prepared me for my current Baptist Health South Florida role. Here, I have had the unique opportunity to oversee multisite pharmacy operations and leverage my expertise in informatics to drive improvements in clinical workflows and patient outcomes. My journey has been characterized by continuous learning, collaboration and a steadfast commitment to advancing pharmacy practice to benefit the communities we serve.

Multisite Pharmacy Operations: Driving Consistency and Innovation

Overseeing multisite pharmacy operations presents many challenges, particularly maintaining consistent quality and efficiency across various facilities. One of the foremost challenges is ensuring seamless communication and coordination among different sites to prevent discrepancies in patient care. Additionally, managing inventory and supply chains effectively to avoid stockouts or overstock situations can be intricate.

I have implemented several initiatives to optimize pharmacy operations to address these challenges. Leveraging advanced informatics systems has enhanced real-time data sharing and communication across sites. This has facilitated better tracking of inventory levels, improved decision-making and streamlined workflows. Moreover, standardizing protocols and procedures across all facilities ensures uniformity in patient care quality.

Another significant initiative involves continuous staff training and development to keep up with the latest advancements and best practices in pharmacy care. We aim to provide seamless and superior patient care across all our multi-site pharmacy operations by implementing these strategies.

Pharmacy Informatics: Powering Data-Driven Improvements in Clinical Workflows and Outcomes

My background in pharmacy informatics has profoundly influenced my approach to improving clinical workflows and patient outcomes across Baptist Health’s multisite facilities. Integrating advanced clinical analytic solutions allows us to identify trends and patterns in patient care, which aid in optimizing treatment plans and reducing medication errors.

Moreover, using analytics solutions in inventory management has streamlined our processes, making tracking and managing supplies easier, thus preventing shortages that could compromise patient care. Informatics also supports continuous quality improvement initiatives by providing metrics and feedback highlighting areas for enhancement. This data-driven approach enables us to make informed decisions, fostering a culture of evidence-based practice. Ultimately, my expertise in pharmacy informatics has been instrumental in driving initiatives that standardize and improve clinical workflows, resulting in better patient outcomes and more efficient operations across our multisite facilities.

Precision Medicine: Personalizing Cancer Care Through Genomics

Precision medicine has become a focal point in my efforts to improve patient outcomes. One key strategy implemented in our organization involves leveraging advanced genomic testing to personalize certain treatment plans based on each patient’s genetic profile. This approach allows us to identify the most effective therapies and minimize adverse effects.

In our cancer centers, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including oncologists and pharmacists, has been instrumental in developing and refining personalized treatment plans for our patients. We also prioritize patient education and engagement, ensuring patients are well-informed about their treatment options and actively involved in decision-making. By combining cutting-edge technology with a patient-centered approach, we aim to enhance the precision of cancer treatment and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

High-Performance Teams: Building Trust, Accountability and a Growth Mindset

When creating a high-performance team, there are four principles I use consistently.

1. Establish Clear Goals and Expectations: I establish clear goals and expectations for each team member and effectively communicate those expectations.

2. Empower and engage my team: Empowering team members by delegating tasks and responsibilities that align with their strengths and growth opportunities, fostering ownership and accountability, is also essential. Provide team members the freedom to make decisions within their roles, fostering a sense of responsibility and initiative.

3. Build trust and collaboration: I try to lead by example and demonstrate the values and behaviors you want to see in your team, such as integrity, respect and accountability.

4. Cultivate a growth mindset: Emphasize learning from successes and failures, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Encourage team members to explore new ideas and approaches, fostering creativity and innovation. Build resilience and adaptability: Help team members develop the skills and mindset to adapt to changing circumstances and bounce back from setbacks.

Strategic Leadership: Inspiring Vision and Fostering Cross-Functional Collaboration

My advice would be to cultivate strategic thinking: Develop the ability to analyze complex situations, identify opportunities and make informed decisions that align with organizational goals. Develop a clear vision, inspire others by creating a compelling vision for the future and motivate your team members to work towards a shared purpose. Lastly, build strong relationships by fostering effective communication and collaboration within teams and across all departments in your organization. To be successful, you need more than just your team; it takes a village to accomplish any project.
