Gator Bio
Breaking the Status Quo of Characterization with Biolayer Interferometry

Modern-day biosensors have shown a variety of applications across multiple industries due to their portability, simplicity, high sensitivity, and the potential to deduce real-time and on-site analysis while also featuring greater speed and lower cost. They also offer the potential for a wide range of decentralized clinical applications, including emergency room screening, home self-testing, and alternative site testing, as well as continuous and real-time in vivo monitoring. In particular, one industry that greatly benefits from these technological advances is the cell and gene therapy sector, which contributes to the development of numerous cancer medications. Case in point, Gator Bio has made promising strides in assisting the R&D function of the cell and gene therapy sector with a best-in-class platform for Biolayer Interferometry(BLI). This platform has demonstrated the versatility to detect biomolecular interactions for rapid quantitation, contributing to kinetic measurements, molecule characterization, epitope binning, and small molecule analysis. Without a shadow of a doubt, BLI is an exquisite combination of engineering and scientific principles that results in revolutionary analytical technologies with superior performance and operational convenience at a fraction of the cost of traditional products in the marketplace.

Gator Bio’s founder and CEO, Dr. Hong Tan, first commercialized the cost-effective BLI technology through FortéBio – a company he founded. Eight years after ForteBio was acquired by Pall, Gator Bio’s team made major improvements to the platform, improving its reliability, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness, enhancing biosensors at the heart of the BLI technology. These developments served as the bedrock of innovation for Gator Bio’s next generation of products - GatorPrime and GatorPlus.

The former is its entry-level, low to medium throughput platform consisting of independent spectrometers capable of running eight samples at once; the instrument allows for assays sizes from one sample to 168 samples in a single run. On the other hand, the GatorPlus is a step-up to GatorPrime that can support standard 96-well and 384-well microplates and is designed to characterize a wide range of biomolecules.

“The GatorPrime and the GatorPlus instruments comprehensively meet the needs of small and medium biotech companies who are developing different therapeutics or biologics,” explains Dr. Tan. The company has also developed a Gator Part11 software that is a total solution for regulated environments of pharma and biopharma companies. “We have a platform that is particularly wellsuited for low to medium throughput protein characterization, and to some extent DNA characterization –applicable not only for small and medium biotech companies today, but also bigger biopharma companies like Pfizer’s and Genentech in the near future,” states Mr. Tan.

Gator Bio features a comprehensive list of products in proteins analysis and gene therapy development, all of which aid in the rigorous research and development to reduce drug manufacturing time. The company plans to release products and total solutions that will fit into every stage of development, beginning with early research and ending with quality control of therapeutic drugs. In addition, it also aims to provide highly sensitive detection of low-level AAV in early discovery to high concentration during manufacturing stages. Conclusively, Gator Bio will be a technology provider enabling end-to-end solutions that address the whole gamut of characterization, utilizing the BLI technology to offer a label-free analysis. Currently, the company focuses on products that provide value to their clients while also assisting scientists in developing medications faster and with unmatched efficiency
