Suzanne Scarlata, Co-founder, Inventor & Consultant; Nima Rahbar, Co-founder, Inventor & ConsultantEarly on, the duo recognized that the Dutch concept was great in theory but held practical challenges. With the help of graduate students, Scarlata and Rahbar explored the use of isolated enzymes for regular treatment, which were found to be more practical and effective. This caught the attention of Charlie Maddox, who joined as a co-founder and CEO of their new venture, Enzymatic.
With Scarlata and Rahbar leading as consultants, Enzymatic embarked on a journey toward greener and self-healing structures.
Its core focus revolves around developing green solutions for concrete, particularly with the use of a derivative of carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme that is present in all living things. Enzymatic’s solution repairs micro-cracks in concrete and acts as a protective shield against harmful substances such as chloride ions. This highly effective, self-healing property enables ordinary concrete to last up to four times longer.
“Our solution enhances the durability of concrete, contributing to its resilience and longevity while also embodying a shift toward sustainable infrastructures through advanced technologies,” says Suzanne Scarlata, co-founder, inventor and consultant.
Testing is being conducted to improve the material’s endurance under water, and for expanding its applications. For example, roof tiles made using this material will enhance the energy storage capacities of solar panels due to the minimal maintenance requirements.
Enzymatic’s commitment to enhancing the strength and stability of building materials across varied environmental conditions adds depth to its focus on green concrete. The innovative additive is known for its remarkable ability to extend the life of concrete and prevent corrosion.
The company has also tested its new additive—a corrosion inhibitor using the carbonic anhydrase enzyme. While production is still in its early stages, it has set up facilities in Puerto Rico for large-scale manufacturing.
The ability to withstand extreme conditions makes its products suitable for a wide range of applications in the construction industry.
Our Solution Enhances The Durability Of Concrete, Contributing To Its Resilience And Longevity While Also Embodying A Shift Toward Sustainable Infrastructures Through Advanced Technologies
The response from industry leaders has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from cement and concrete companies, who see the value in adopting Enzymatic’s solutions. Besides the financial benefits of low maintenance, there is a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Enzymatic’s vision extends beyond improving concrete. It is dedicated to making its solutions accessible to everyone, including builders and homeowners. This goal has the potential to make sustainable construction practices the norm rather than the exception. The company is in the process of partnering with leading retailers to fulfill this vision.
Its pioneering solution showcases a forward-thinking ethos that aims to establish a resilient, efficient and sustainable built environment. Enzymatic’s unwavering dedication to sustainable practices has positively impacted the construction industry, making it more eco-friendly.
