FamiCord

Europe’s Leading Stem Cell Bank

Tomasz Baran, MD, Chief Medical Officer

Stem cell storage at birth is a once-in-a-lifetime decision. Parents want the confidence that their child’s cells will remain clinically viable if ever needed. That trust depends on more than storage—it relies on medical experience, transparent operations, full licensing, and a proven record of therapeutic use. With more than 25 years of continuous operation and its oldest German facility, Vita34, nearing 30 years, FamiCord is Europe’s largest family stem cell banking group and the only publicly listed company in this field. It gives families assurance through transparency and long-term realibility, confirming FamiCord as the best choice in Europe for stem cell banking. The company offers a complete system that guides parents from collection to processing, long-term preservation, and eventual release of cord blood and perinatal tissue for treatment. Each step is anaged under strict medical and regulatory standards to ensure cells retain therapeutic potential, with a documented chain of custody, validated cold-chain transport, and laboratory checks for viability and sterility. This matters because gobally, hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood have been used in more than 60,000 transplants across 80 diseases, and 158 ongoing clinical trials continue to refine indications and delivery. Regenerative medicine is rapidly opening new uses for cord blood and cord tissue. Beyond hematology, cord blood contains immuno- and neuroactive cell subsets under study for autism, cerebral palsy, neurodegeneration, autoimmune and cardiovascular conditions, with 140 active clinical trials worldwide. “We are not simply a bank of stem cells. A bank only stores the material, but it is really about whether you ever can deploy the stem cells for a transplant or therapy. We are glad we have that experience,” says Tomasz Baran, MD, Chief Medical Officer. Strength Through Structure and Innovation FamiCord operates under licensed medical service frameworks across major European markets, ensuring full national regulatory compliance and external oversight. About half of its 15 laboratories hold AABB accreditation, one of two international standards for cord blood standards in banking. As EBMT member, FamiCord aligns with Europe’s bone marrow transplant and cell therapies community. Scale, application experience, and transparency are core strengths. As Europe’s only publicly listed stem cell bank, FamiCord provides families and partners with full transparency into its financial stability—aligned with the long-term horizons of stem cell preservation. In 2024 FamiCord expanded beyond Europe, opening its first lab in Dubai-quickly earning AABB accreditation, applying standards established in European operations. Regional names such as Smart Cells (UK and Dubai) and Vita 34 (DACH region) now operate under the FamiCord umbrella, helping clinicians and parents recognize that a single, regulated organization stands behind the service..

Magellan Biologics and Consulting

Achieving Excellence in Transient Protein Expression

Jérôme Puginier, General Manager, Magellan Biologics and Consulting

Transient protein expression (TGE) in mammalian cells has become a cornerstone of modern biotechnology, powering discovery and preclinical research worldwide. It enables the rapid production of proteins for screening, assay development, and candidate selection, but the process is often complex and unpredictable. Tedious steps, variability in yields, differences between constructs, and inconsistent results force teams to repeat attempts or troubleshoot, stretching timelines and consuming valuable resources. As protein targets become more complex, these challenges only intensify. In an environment where delays in material quality or availability can impact downstream decisions, R&D teams need a system that consistently delivers, reduces complexity, contains costs, and accelerates programs. Magellan Biologics and Consulting provides exactly that. With decades of experience in mammalian expression systems, the team has developed CHO 4Tx®, a streamlined, ready-to-use platform designed to improve consistency, reduce rework, and increase yields. It gives R&D teams greater control over protein production so they can focus on science rather than setbacks. “CHO 4Tx® was designed to simplify TGE and eliminate variability-generating parameters. Researchers receive a straightforward protocol, high reproducibility, and support from a team that understands both the technology and the pressures our clients face,” says Jerome Puginier, “Head of Business Development” should be in one line. The Science Behind CHO 4Tx® Designed by scientists for scientists, CHO 4Tx® simplifies TGE without compromising performance, offering fast setup, predictable output, and flexibility. The system combines three optimized components: a proprietary CHO cell line developed for high-yield expression, a patented three-step protocol, and three dedicated media formulations, each supporting a distinct phase of the process. The step in generating DNA delivery complexes prior to exposing the DNA to cells and media is eliminated. The workflow is straightforward. After seeding cells in the cultivation medium, researchers switch to the transfection medium and add the DNA of interest. Three hours later, the production medium is introduced, supporting sustained expression for up to 14 days. No DNA complexing or feeding steps are required, reducing variability and hands-on time. Harvesting can be performed at 7, 10, or 14 days depending on project requirements. Whether teams are producing dozens of constructs in sub-milliliter volumes for screening or scaling up to 40 liters or more, CHO 4Tx® delivers consistent results across formats. It provides laboratories with the speed and reliability of an in-house system without the usual complexity. The company also continuously invests in refining transient workflows through in-house R&D, ensuring its platforms evolve with the needs of modern laboratories..

Accertis

Driving Measurable Impact in Pharmaceutical Market Consulting

Martin Weilenmann, Managing Director

Every major pharmaceutical company carries the weight of two competing demands. On one side is the need to develop breakthrough therapies that transform patient lives. On the other side are the challenges of crowded markets, complex regulations, and teams stretched thin across multiple strategies. Patient benefit is the original purpose of innovation, but it has begun to fade behind layers of reporting, compliance tasks, and fragmented execution. Sales growth, which should reflect the strength of both science and strategy, suffers when focus drifts. What many organizations lack is not vision but a way to translate it into lasting results. Accertis has emerged as that partner. The firm brings together years of leadership experience within large pharmaceutical companies and a strong consulting record with global leaders. Its philosophy rests on two foundations: a deep understanding of operational realities gained from senior roles inside pharma organizations, and a focus on aligning clients with the value their products bring to patients. Accertis understands that this patient-centered perspective can fade under corporate pressure, yet restoring it is crucial to sustained performance. “What we do is based on year-long experience in large pharmaceutical companies, and we align our customers on product value to patients,” says Martin Weilenmann, managing director. The firm sets itself apart by combining consulting expertise with mentoring and ensuring that recommendations can be applied directly by sales and medical science liaison teams. Instead of leaving strategies on paper, Accertis strengthens execution within client organizations. Projects consistently deliver measurable outcomes, with sales performance and return on investment improving within months of implementation. This practical, results-driven model has established Accertis as a trusted advisor to more than 80 clients, including leading pharmaceutical companies across Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and Austria. Regional realities shape the firm’s consulting methods. Patient benefit is universal, but access and regulatory frameworks differ across borders. While Accertis does not manage regulatory processes, it integrates market differences into strategies and tactics. Large pharmaceutical companies often pursue several strategic directions at once, which can scatter resources. Accertis works closely with local teams to identify priorities and concentrate efforts where the impact is strongest. This disciplined focus helps clients manage complexity without losing sight of their objectives..

EDITORIAL

Collaboration across Europe’s Advanced Life Sciences

Across Europe, four once-separate capabilities now function like a single system: digital epigenetic mapping that sharpens hypotheses, consulting that translates signals into regulatory routes, stem cell banks that standardise inputs, and transient protein expression that tests ideas in material. Together they turn discovery into something usable. Discovery becomes evidence. Evidence becomes access.

Digital epigenetic mapping shows how cells change, flags biomarkers, and tightens hypotheses that matter in real trials. Consulting teams then convert those signals into regulatory roadmaps and HTA narratives for EU and UK review. Stem cell banks supply well-characterised lines so researchers adopt shared standards and achieve reproducibility across borders. Transient expression in HEK and CHO produces proteins quickly for assays and early leads, closing the loop between omics and function.

Friction persists. Data silos and divergent sharing rules make clean multicountry datasets slow to build. Regulations shift and jurisdictional differences add drag for biologics and digital-health programmes. Stem cell oversight varies by nation, creating uncertainty for cross-border sourcing. In the lab, transient expression still struggles with yield, stability, and scale-up.

Progress is visible. The European Health Data Space is promoting common data models and privacy-preserving exchange. Specialist consulting prealigns endpoints, real-world evidence, and AI documentation with current expectations to avoid late surprises. Ethical harmonisation and transparent consent are strengthening trust in stem cell banking and expanding access to standardised lines. In parallel, better vectors, tuned media, and engineered cell lines are lifting consistency and speed.

Taken together, these moves are knitting Europe into a more connected ecosystem where high-quality insight, reliable materials, and faster expression are aligned, and strong science advances toward patients with greater confidence.

In this edition, we feature firms and individuals shaping these markets, including Precision Antibody, a leading biotechnology company specialising in high-affinity custom antibody development. We also include insights from Marcelo Vaz, Vice President, Medical Services at TMC Pharma Services, and Stefano Ferrara, Director of Clinical Science at BeiGene, offering a panoramic market view and helping you make more data-driven business decisions.
