However, this rapid expansion has led to challenges such as market saturation and regulatory hurdles, which impact the industry's sustainability. In Canada, the cannabis market is also experiencing significant growth, with revenue projected to reach $5.63 billion in 2024 and potentially $6.58 billion by 2029. This expansion is driven by increasing consumer acceptance and the proliferation of retail outlets nationwide. However, similar to the U.S., the Canadian market faces challenges related to regulatory compliance and market competition.



Environmental Impact of Cannabis Cultivation


Cannabis cultivation, whether indoor or outdoor, has significant environmental implications. Key areas of concern include water usage, energy consumption, pesticides and chemicals, air pollution, waste management, and land use and habitat disruption.


Companies are increasingly using recyclable and biodegradable materials, such as plant-based plastics and compostable films that break down naturally over time. Glass bottles and jars are popular choices for their durability and recyclability


Cannabis is a water-intensive crop, with outdoor cultivation requiring up to 22 litres of water per plant per day. This high demand can strain local water resources and affect ecosystems. Indoor cultivation is particularly energyintensive due to the need for artificial lighting, heating, and ventilation, resulting in substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The use of pesticides and fertilizers can lead to soil and water contamination, harming local wildlife and ecosystems. Cannabis plants emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which can affect indoor and outdoor air quality. Cultivation generates significant organic waste, including plant material and packaging waste, needing proper disposal and recycling practices to minimize environmental impact. Expanding cannabis farms can lead to habitat fragmentation, soil erosion, and sedimentation in nearby water bodies. To address these challenges, some growers are adopting sustainable practices such as precision irrigation, renewable energy sources, and organic farming methods.


Trends in Eco-Friendly Packaging


As the cannabis industry grows, so does the need for sustainable packaging solutions. This is particularly important for cannabisinfused edibles and beverages, which require specialized containers. Companies are increasingly using recyclable and biodegradable materials, such as plant-based plastics and compostable films that break down naturally over time. Glass bottles and jars are popular choices for their durability and recyclability. Minimalist packaging designs focus on using fewer materials while still providing adequate protection for the product, appealing to eco-conscious consumers. Lightweight and durable pouches made from hemp or other plant-based materials are becoming more common. Sustainable packaging must follow various food safety regulations, which can vary by region. Educating consumers about the benefits and proper disposal of sustainable packaging is crucial. Edibles require packaging that protects them from contamination and damage, and sustainable materials must provide the same level of protection as traditional packaging. Even sustainable packaging can pose challenges if not properly disposed of, as compostable packaging, for example, requires specific conditions to break down. Integrating sustainable packaging into existing supply chains can be complex, involving sourcing materials and adapting manufacturing processes.
