Masahiro Niwa

Masahiro Niwa serves as Head of Drug Product & Device Development Japan at Takeda Pharmaceutical, advancing global pharmaceutical innovation through integrated drug product science, device development and CMC strategy.

A Global Journey in Transforming Drug Development

Masahiro Niwa’s career reflects a deep commitment to transforming pharmaceutical development through seamless integration across formulation, device design, regulatory compliance and manufacturing operations. Since joining Takeda in 2006, he has shaped the development trajectory of numerous therapies by aligning cross-functional CMC strategies with evolving global standards.

From his early days as a formulation researcher at Takeda in Osaka, Niwa has been driven by a holistic view of drug development. His pivotal role in the U.S. as Scientific Director at Takeda’s Cambridge hub exemplifies his ability to bridge scientific innovation with global strategy. Known for blending technical depth with strategic foresight, his leadership creates pathways where science and operational excellence intersect. In his current role as Head of Drug Product & Device Development Japan, he is elevating the country’s influence within Takeda’s global value chain, ensuring that Japan-based innovations achieve global scalability.

In every phase, Niwa has played a key role in reducing development timelines, enhancing product stability and improving the patient experience. This has been achieved through innovations such as easier-to-administer dosage forms and by streamlining supply chain logistics. He continues to mentor teams and foster collaborative environments that accelerate Takeda’s mission of delivering transformative therapies worldwide.

Shaping the Future of CMC Innovation

As Takeda embraces a future powered by digital intelligence and decentralized manufacturing, Masahiro Niwa is laying the groundwork for a more agile and integrated CMC model. This new approach ensures that early-stage decisions lead to faster, more consistent delivery of transformative therapies.

In this capacity, he is strengthening Japan’s role within Takeda’s global network by driving advancements in drug products and combination device development that reinforce the company’s value chain. He also oversees the Medical Device Center of Excellence, where he drives design control and usability practices while shaping the broader regulatory strategy. Under his leadership, the center has deepened its focus on human factors and patient-centered design, embedding safety and regulatory compliance throughout development while elevating the overall user experience.

Niwa brings a global perspective and deep technical expertise across formulation science and complex manufacturing systems, playing a pivotal role in advancing Takeda’s evolving technology platforms. These include real-time decision-making tools, process automation and scalable solutions that support streamlined global launches.

His approach bridges science and strategy, with a proactive focus on risk management and regulatory readiness. Through strategic planning and cross-functional mentorship, he is streamlining development while enhancing outcomes and building delivery systems prepared for future demands.

As CMC evolves from a support function into a driver of innovation, Niwa ensures Takeda remains agile and globally connected, while maintaining a relentless focus on delivering better therapies more quickly for patients worldwide.
