Compassionate Care Enhanced by Digital Innovation

In 2021, the U.S. invested a staggering $4.3 trillion in healthcare, equivalent to 18.3 percent of the nation's GDP. Despite this substantial investment and the exponential growth of medical knowledge and technology, life expectancy decreased to 76.4 years, its lowest point in two decades. Here's the kicker: over 330,000 healthcare professionals, including 117,000 devoted physicians, left the field. Those who remained grappled with an overwhelming workload, with 50-60 percent reporting signs of burnout. Meanwhile, an aging population faces increasing healthcare demands due to the rising prevalence and complexity of diseases, from cancer to diabetes. The result? Prolonged waiting times, frustrated patients, and a bewilderingly fragmented healthcare landscape.


Technology-Enabled Pursuit of Purpose


However, amid these challenges, a beacon of hope shines. Children dream of becoming doctors, nurses, therapists, or technicians because they feel called to pursue a life of deep purpose and meaning, to improve the lives of others in their time of greatest need. They dream of truly meaningful and fulfilling work that betters the human race. However, the complex systems they operate within have realized that aspiration becomes more difficult every day. There is less time for true patient care due to the burden of mounting paperwork, authorization requests, insurance billing, and electronic health record management. Looking ahead to a brighter future for healthcare in the U.S., there has never been a more important time for well-designed and thoughtful technology to enable, amplify, and extend the expertise of the incredible workforce still committed to this noble work.


It's not just about streamlining processes; it's about empowering patients to access the right care at the right time, in the right place at the right cost.


Healthcare workers spend every day with their patients, understanding their concerns and diagnosing the reasons behind those concerns, and healthcare delivery networks have robust systems in place to see problems, identify root causes, and solve those issues. As the superpower to solve problems is unleashed on the most difficult system issues with newly available technology tools, there is real potential to improve the experience of dedicated clinicians and bring joy back to practicing medicine.


The 50 Percent Conundrum


On average, healthcare professionals spend 50 percent of their day on non-patient-facing clerical and administrative tasks. In other words, our caregivers are only able to provide half of the care and compassion that they and their patients would want. Innovation in healthcare is challenging and takes time, especially when dealing with the sensitivity of personal health information. However, the problems plaguing the healthcare ecosystem are large and growing, and there are early signs that in the next 5-10 years, with the convergence of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, generative artificial intelligence, large language models, natural language processing, and machine learning, the right change is coming.


A Seamless Symphony: Merging the Digital and Human


Imagine a healthcare ecosystem where digital and inperson care coexist harmoniously, tailored to each patient's unique needs. The good news? We're no longer dreaming; emerging technologies and user-friendly interfaces are forging this reality. They offer a lifeline to an industry ripe for transformation.


But here's the twist: the linchpins in this transformation aren't merely startups or tech giants. Healthcare systems themselves, traditionally cautious about change, are stepping up. Why? Because patients engage with them throughout their lives, across diverse settings, and for a myriad of services and patients are seeking change. The blending of patients' trust in traditional and slowermoving healthcare systems and the need for a startuplike focus, experimentation, and innovation necessitates novel partnerships—a fusion of healthcare systems and government, startups, tech companies, retail businesses, pharmacies, payers, and, of course, patients. The mission? To collaboratively tackle complex challenges. It's a celebration of diversity and cooperation, fueling the possibilities of the future.


Rewriting the Rules: A Prescription for Joy


To pave the path for a healthcare renaissance, we must scrutinize the status quo. We need to comprehend the root issues within our processes and the friction points that must be addressed. Additionally, we must understand the potential and limitations of emerging technology. Our goal? To reignite the joy of practicing medicine, eliminate the tedium of paperwork and data entry, and refocus on the core of our profession—healing.


Promising Use Cases Are Already Reshaping the Landscape:


Farewell to Waiting Rooms: Customized patient intake forms, completed via smartphones, banish redundant paperwork. Arriving at a healthcare facility, a friendly face guides patients to their designated waiting area.


AI-Powered Scribes: The exam room bids adieu to computers. AI-enabled scribes document notes, suggest orders and manage billing, enabling clinicians to devote their attention to patient care.


Efficiency in Data: Summarizing and organizing patient history, plans, and current records from diverse electronic health systems streamlines tasks for healthcare teams.


Multilingual Care: Complex medical terminology is translated into patient-friendly language tailored to their preferred spoken tongue.


Connecting Hope: Automated clinical trial matching connects eligible patients with potentially life-saving trials when conventional options fall short.


Empowering Patients: Robust self-service tools empower patients with scheduling, bill payment, and easy access to medical records. It's about giving patients control over their healthcare.


Unlocking the potential of healthcare technology in a way that works for physicians and patients has the power to revolutionize the industry, unleashing trillions of dollars in health improvements within the U.S. alone. It's not just about streamlining processes; it's about empowering patients to access the right care at the right time, in the right place at the right cost. With technology as our ally, the compassionate care team can focus on what truly matters: healing and improving lives.
