Redefining Recombinant Protein Generation Through Innovative Biotechnology

"Black soldier flies eat 1,400 times their weight in ten days, making it a better biomass indicator than traditional bioreactors. Producing recombinant proteins begins with a transcriptomic analysis of black soldier flies feeding on different substrates to identify over-expressing genes. ByBug then performs an analysis to identify specific larval components that need modification to produce the targeted protein, followed by trials with a test protein to increase production within the larvae. The result? Dried larvae rich in protein, healthy fatty acids, vitamin B12, essential minerals, and containing the desired recombinant protein serving as oral vaccines for animals, enzymes, functional ingredients, and even biomaterials.d

One of ByBug's inaugural ventures involved collaboration with AQUIT, a salmon aquaculture company, to develop a specialized oral immunostimulant. By genetically modifying the larvae to optimize quantities of the specific protein, ByBug empowered the client to effortlessly administer the immunostimulant to their salmon population through regular feed, eliminating the need for antibiotics.

In addition to ByBug Synthetics, the company has also developed ByBug Farms, an in-situ modular infrastructure that merges the natural decomposing process of black soldier flies with synthetic biotechnology to enable the efficient conversion of organic waste into recombinant proteins, surpassing industry standards in terms of cost and quality.

"Our key asset is insect eggs. We breed genetically modified black soldier flies and provide clients with the eggs to process organic waste," says Bluske. "Clients worldwide approach us with their recombinant protein requirements, and we develop genetically modified eggs containing the desired protein. These eggs can be used in insect breeding facilities to process organic waste and generate recombinant proteins, or we can provide our clients with our ByBug Farms to process their organic waste and generate their own recombinant proteins."
