Advancements in biotechnology have opened doors to brand-new therapies for complex genetic disorders and rare diseases. These therapies rely on the delicate handling of living cells and genetic materials, which are often as fragile as they are transformative.

For innovators in cell and gene therapy (CGT), overcoming manufacturing challenges and ensuring the viability of biologics throughout their lifecycle are critical to success. BioLife Solutions addresses this issue, enabling life sciences researchers to focus on discovery rather than process reinvention, combining cutting-edge technology with its strong commitment to quality and customer success.

Named one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by Seattle Business Magazine, BioLife Solutions began as a modest venture with a novel biopreservation medium and limited resources.

Today, it is a trusted leader in the bioproduction industry, offering a broad portfolio of tools and services that optimize and de-risk CGT manufacturing, storage, distribution and thawing processes. The company's growth is rooted in its dedication to solving its customers' challenges while maintaining a steadfast focus on trust, integrity and innovation.

Pushing the Boundaries of Research

BioLife’s pioneering biopreservation offerings, CryoStor and HypoThermosol, are the gold standard in freeze and storage media. Designed to maintain the health and functionality of biological materials during preservation, these products are embedded in over 500 clinical applications—proving essential for maintaining biological viability and advancing scientific progress.

In addition, its pathogen-reduced human platelet lysates, including nLiven PR hPL and Stemulate hPL, raise the bar by minimizing safety risks and boosting cell performance. This enhancement empowers researchers to push the boundaries of their work, confident that they are using sterile, batch-qualified, and rigorously tested media to prevent inconsistencies and contamination.

Supporting researchers in their pursuit of excellence, BioLife has built an Evidence Library—its collection of scientific resources featuring presentations, journal articles, abstracts and posters. This expansive, searchable library allows researchers to quickly find real-world applications of its products across preclinical and clinical settings. Offering insights into cell lines, disease indications and cell processing, BioLife ensures that the scientific community has the knowledge and tools to make breakthroughs, drive progress and move confidently from research to clinical success.

Enhancing Cell and Gene Therapy Processing

Understanding the prevalent challenges of CGT manufacturing, BioLife excels in cell expansion and product preservation. Its subsidiary, Sexton Biotechnologies, delivers specialized cell processing tools such as Signata CT-5 and CellSeal Cryogenic Vials. These solutions protect and optimize cells during manufacturing, providing safety, flexibility and scalability.

Adding to its innovative portfolio, BioLife Solutions launched the CellSeal CryoCase on November 18, 2024. It is the first rigid primary container designed for closed-system fill and retrieval of larger fluid volumes (up to 75 mL), addressing the needs of CGT developers. CryoCase overcomes common challenges associated with traditional cryostorage containers like cryobags and cryovials by offering enhanced fracture resistance that ensures sample integrity during freezing, transport and thawing.

Its transparent design allows for easier inspection of samples, enabling quicker identification of contaminants, bubbles and particulates. Supporting automation-ready workflows, the CryoCase reduces labor requirements and processing time while eliminating time-consuming air evacuation steps required by cryobags. Internal and thirdparty data confirm equivalent performance to traditional containers in critical metrics such as cell density, recovery and viability during freeze-thaw cycles.

With its ability to streamline workflows, reduce sample loss and promote compliance with GMP and cGMP protocols, the CryoCase accelerates regulatory approvals and enhances the availability of life-saving therapies.

Innovative Solutions for Critical CGT Workflows

In the high-stakes world of CGT, transporting live cells and biologics requires impeccable precision and security. BioLife’s cold chain solutions are designed to meet these demands head-on. Paired with cloud-based software integration, its evo DV10 Smart Shippers ensure secure and reliable transport while offering visibility into critical shipment details. These innovations minimize risks and provide peace of mind for researchers and clinicians handling sensitive materials.

Thawing biologics is another critical juncture in CGT workflows, often fraught with risks of contamination and over-thawing when manual methods are used. BioLife’s ThawSTAR platform eliminates these risks, offering standardized, water-free thawing systems for cryobags and vials. With pre-thaw temperature stability and scalability from research to commercial manufacturing, ThawSTAR modernizes the thawing process. Whether used in labs or at the point of care, this technology highlights the company’s commitment to practical, transformative solutions.

A People-First Approach

Behind BioLife’s technological prowess is a team of over 400 dedicated professionals who bring their passion and expertise to work every day. The company fosters a performance-based culture of honesty, integrity and authentic communication. Guided by strong values such as trust and commitment, team members collaborate to exceed customer expectations, continuously improve quality and maintain financial performance that maximizes shareholder value.

From its humble beginnings, BioLife has grown into a global force in bioproduction. The company isn’t content to rest on its laurels. As its customers' needs evolve, so does BioLife’s portfolio. By expanding its tools and services, it is committed to driving innovation, supporting customer success and ultimately contributing to the betterment of its industry.

BioLife's impact extends beyond its products. It plays a pivotal role in advancing regenerative medicine, biobanking and drug discovery by providing life science companies and clinical researchers with tools to enhance the shelf life and functionality of biologics. Its contributions enable the development of new therapies that save and improve lives, fostering a future where science can meet the challenges of even the most complex diseases.

BioLife exemplifies the fusion of innovation and purpose, delivering solutions that address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s needs. From pioneering biopreservation media to redefining cold chain management and thawing processes, it has become a trusted partner in the life sciences.

Guided by strong values and a commitment to excellence, it continues to reform the bioproduction industry, helping researchers and therapy developers achieve their goals and improve lives worldwide. Turning complex challenges into opportunities, BioLife Solutions proves that its mission is more than a statement—it’s a promise to the future of healthcare.
