The concept of biosimilars goes hand in hand with affordable healthcare. Significantly more cost-effective than the reference product, a biosimilar drug brings with it a wide range of benefits like improved accessibility and efficacy and more treatment options for both healthcare providers and patients.

The need for further innovation is ever-present in this field, and one pharmaceutical company spares no expense in taking biosimilars to the next level.

Arven Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of the Toksöz Group, aims to treat respiratory diseases through biosimilar products. It is the first Turkish company to develop biosimilars for global markets, including the U.S. and EU. It is also the first and only producer of a biosimilar drug in Turkey manufactured entirely in-vitro from cell to final product.

“Our main focus is on the innovative side of the pharmaceutical sector, which reflects in our biosimilar products,” says Zafer Toksöz, owner of Arven Pharmaceuticals.

It employs a ‘the product is the process’ approach while strictly adhering to WHO, European Medicines Agency, and FDA guidelines during manufacturing. This focus on quality allows it to produce biosimilars that meet the same high standards as the reference products, providing accessible and affordable healthcare alternatives.

A deep commitment to producing innovative biosimilars is the driving force behind Arven's success. At the forefront of its accomplishments is a biosimilar of Pegfilgrastim, a medication for neutropenia. The biosimilar was isolated as a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor from E. coli in laboratory conditions.

Arven has also created a cutting-edge dry powder inhaler (DPI) device to facilitate easier intake of lung medication at different flow rates. Meticulously designed from scratch using unique molds, this innovative device ensures patients receive the prescribed medication without compromising the safety and efficacy of the drug.

Unlike capsule devices, the DPI ensures patients never have to touch the actual drug, which minimizes contamination risks and provides a more effective and precise way to deliver medication to the lungs. The dose counts are monitored with the numbers on the blister strip, while the trigger mechanism and cap system prevent incorrect dosage.

Beyond conventional applications, the versatility of Arven's drug delivery devices allows them to administer various medical compounds to the lungs, making them invaluable in treating respiratory infections and other conditions. This direct route to the lungs enables rapid delivery of medications to the bloodstream, even outpacing injectable methods.

Not limited to the pharmaceutical space, Arven seeks to improve nutritional care for the entire healthcare sector. Delving into enteral nutrition, it has created proprietary formulas tailored to specific medical indications. Unlike traditional food-based products, its formulas are designed to address patient needs under the guidance of medical professionals. Its goal is to revolutionize enteral nutrition and elevate patient care with formulas catering to pediatric, oncology, and geriatric patients.

Throughout its journey, Arven has remained firmly rooted in R&D. Its state-of-the-art R&D facility in Istanbul has the capacity to produce bulk products in a controlled, GMP-compliant environment through validated processes. The facility was the first in Turkey to be granted a GMP certification in 2017, and can undertake both upstream and downstream pharmaceutical production processes.

Looking to the future, Arven sets its sights on further expansion into the biologics and vaccine sectors. It aims to bolster vaccine production capacity and invest in a new facility in Malta to produce injectables for use in the European Union.

Arven Pharmaceuticals stands as an epitome of innovation within the pharmaceutical sector, blazing a trail of success in developing biotechnological biosimilars and novel drug delivery systems. Driven to introduce more innovative medicines into the market like cannabidiol inhalation products and a new product that can directly deliver medicines for treating viral infections to lungs, Arven Pharmaceuticals is poised to usher in a new era in healthcare.
