Key Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Synthetic Biology

Life Sciences Review | Wednesday, April 20, 2022

With AI and synthetic biology, researchers are already working on designing biological algorithms that can locate and kill cancer cells.

Fremont, CA: Artificial intelligence (AI) in synthetic biology can assist engineers in developing new ways of designing genetic circuits, which can have a significant influence on industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

Synthetic biology is a topic that scientists rarely discuss. The application of AI in synthetic biology, on the other hand, receives even less attention. The convergence of AI with synthetic biology, on the other hand, can help us tackle most of the difficulties we face in healthcare, petroleum, agricultural, and other industries. The healthcare industry and environmental sustainability are some of the most binding domains for the survival of the human species. Therefore, they are the two key applications of AI in synthetic biology.

Use of AI in synthetic biology

Healthcare

The combination of AI with synthetic biology can aid in discovering therapies for diseases including cancer, HIV, and many others. Protein engineering can help improve the performance of existing antibodies. Scientists may develop over 500 million versions of a primary antibody using AI technology. They may then examine the alterations to the antibody molecules and identify which ones are the most beneficial. The AI system may then help forecast how well different antibodies will attach to their needed target in the actual world.

The data may get utilized to refine the sequence even further. Eventually, an excellent molecule is created that accomplishes the goal. This method can save a significant amount of time when testing novel DNA sequences to develop drugs to treat life-threatening disorders. With AI and synthetic biology, researchers are already working on designing biological algorithms that can locate and kill cancer cells.

Environmental sustainability

Artificial intelligence is already assisting us in our attempts to improve environmental sustainability. It has already been used in various ways, including waste management, greener manufacturing techniques, and reducing the carbon footprint of various activities. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help us fight for a greener world more effectively using synthetic biology. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) may get utilized to construct creatures that can get sent into the seas to remove contaminants. Other uses include the development of environmentally friendly polymers and yeast-based biofuels. A group of synthetic biologists is now also working on developing bacteria that can remove dangerous environmental chemicals, such as arsenic. In addition, AI can assist scientists in building environmentally friendly species by drastically speeding up research procedures in various fields. As a result, artificial intelligence in synthetic biology can help us identify methods to increase our survival before it is too late.
