Digital Solutions Transforming the Drug Development Sector

Life Sciences Review | Tuesday, December 06, 2022
Tweet

The drug development industry is integrating digital solutions and new trends that facilitate its ability to effectively produce drugs in safe, patient-centred, and cost-effective ways.

FREMONT, CA: Drug development is a time-consuming, complicated, and costly process with a high level of success uncertainty in clinical approval. Along with this, unknown pathologists, a lack of patient stratification, and inaccurate models bring additional challenges to this process. To overcome these issues, the pharmaceutical industry is adopting the latest technologies and trends while ensuring efficiency and meeting regulatory requirements.

AI and Data Analytics: In the past few years, there has been a radical increase in data digitalisation in the pharmaceutical industry. Startups develop better tools to acquire, scrutinise, and apply large volumes of data towards bottlenecks in drug development. AI applications aid drug discovery, repurposing, side effect prediction, and clinical trials. Moreover, it assists in decision-making to determine the right therapy for patients, including personalised medicines. Data-driven intelligent technologies make drug development procedures faster, more cost-effective, and more productive.

Patient-Centric Trials: Digital health technologies offer an opportunity to transform traditional clinical trials into patient-centric models. Digital devices and wearables amass the physiological and behavioural data of patients in their natural environment. Access to real-world data (RWD) renders a comprehensive drug safety view and efficiency. For instance, clinical teams track drug dosing details to improve medication adherence. Apart from this, the human-centric approach reduces the patient burden, provides personalised care, and facilitates accurate data collection. Furthermore, increased patient engagement enhances research quality and lifesaving cure production.

Assay Development: Cell-based and in-vitro assays are cornerstones of successful drug discovery and development. Poor assay choices result in irrelevant, variable, or misleading results, translating into delays and expensive programme failures. Therefore, startups focus on assay technologies to improve productivity and reduce attrition rates. Recent innovations range from modified phenotypic assays and new screening models to label-free technologies and predictive toxicity testing. Additionally, new drug strategies integrate data from different sources to extract more insights into therapeutic mechanisms. Assay developments and advancements are enabling effective medicine production with minimal experiments.

Advanced Manufacturing: Pharmaceutical companies look for ways to improve operational efficiency and productivity during the manufacturing process. They integrate robotics, immersive technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), etc. to achieve this. As mixed reality (MR) solutions enhance staff training, robots automate manual tasks and shorten the cycle time. Moreover, they help to meet clean room requirements and reduce space at plants. New production processes enable rethinking drug shapes and forms to advance their pharmacological properties. In this way, advanced drug manufacturing technologies deliver products faster, mitigate their environmental footprints, and provide consistent quality.

The drug development industry is massively integrating digital solutions, biotechnological novelties, and advanced manufacturing. These trends facilitate the pharmaceutical sector's ability to effectively produce drugs in safe, patient-oriented, and cost-effective ways. Future innovations will make personalised treatments for various diseases more accessible, and emerging startups will develop alternative methods to shift drug development from treatment to prevention.
