Through its decentralised nature and cryptographic mechanisms, blockchain ensures that data derived from clinical trials and medical research remains tamper-proof and verifiable, thereby enhancing data integrity and public trust in evidence-based medicine. This aspect is particularly crucial in ensuring the credibility of clinical trial results and protecting against data manipulation or fraud.Furthermore, blockchain facilitates transparent and auditable data sharing among relevant stakeholders, including researchers, participants, regulators and sponsors. By enabling real-time access to authenticated trial data while maintaining privacy through encryption techniques, blockchain enhances transparency throughout the trial lifecycle. This transparency fosters greater trust among stakeholders and allows for more informed decision-making regarding trial participation, protocol design, and regulatory compliance.Moreover, blockchain's ability to streamline processes such as patient consent management, randomisation, and supply chain tracking can further enhance the efficiency and reliability of clinical trials. By automating and digitising these processes, blockchain reduces administrative burdens, minimises errors and increases the traceability of trial activities.Overall, blockchain technology holds immense promise in revolutionising the conduct of clinical trials by bolstering integrity, transparency, and efficiency across the research ecosystem. However, continued research, collaboration between the regulators and the industry, and standardisation efforts are essential to realise the full potential of blockchain in transforming the clinical trial landscape.Challenges in Adopting Blockchain Technology for Clinical Trial ManagementSeveral challenges emerge in adopting blockchain technology for clinical and medical evidence generation. First and foremost, regulatory compliance, namely, regulatory frameworks governing clinical trials, varies across jurisdictions and, in many cases, hardly cope with the rapid advancements in technology. While financial market regulators have become increasingly vigilant of blockchain's opportunities, integrating Dr. Tomaz Vaupotic is a senior director of clinical and medical quality at Alvotech.
