The fields of oncology, neurology, immunology, infectious diseases, or regenerative medicine have been the major drivers for innovative biotech research and development. No wonder the global biotechnology market that was valued at USD 752.88 billion in 2020 is expected to expand at a CAGR of 15.83 percent from 2021 to 2028. The critical contributor to such exponential growth of modern biotechnology is undoubtedly DNA sequencing. Simply put, it is the process of determining nucleotide variations pertaining to specific genetic diseases. This ultimately leads to better understanding and treatment of diseases. DNA sequencing also underpins a relatively new discipline--pharmacogenomics or the study of genome in drug response. Combining the principles of pharmacology and genomics supports the development of effective medications tailored to a person's genetic makeup. Needless to say, pharmacogenomics today has become one of the most important fields in biotechnology by supporting the notion of individualized drugs and discarding the concept of "one drug fits all patients."Cancer treatment has also made significant strides with the help of advanced biotechnology. Take immuno-oncology, for instance. This treatment method undermines the concept of directly attacking the tumors; instead, it promotes the idea of stimulating the body's own immune system to fight cancer. Several clinical studies have revealed that immune-oncology can change the face of cancer treatment not only by killing tumor cells but also by eliminating the chances of its re-emergence. These are just a few areas where modern biotechnology is doing wonders. It can open up new treatment avenues for several other disease types, which is probably why many biotech start-ups are emerging and indulging in research and development.
